Where to Stay in Busan: Which Area Fits Your Trip

Stay in Haeundae if the beach is the point of the trip or you are traveling with kids. Pick Seomyeon or Busan Station if this is your first visit and you are arriving by KTX from Seoul, since both sit on subway Line 1 and Seomyeon is where Lines 1 and 2 cross. Choose Nampo-dong if you came for food and markets: Jagalchi Market, Gukje Market and BIFF Square are all within walking distance. Gwangalli is the quieter beach option, with the lit-up Gwangan Bridge in front of you at night.

Gwangan Bridge and the Haeundae skyline in Busan

Busan is long and thin, and the two main subway lines decide most of your travel time. Line 1 runs through the old downtown (Nampo, Busan Station, Seomyeon). Line 2 runs along the coast (Seomyeon, Gwangalli, Haeundae) and also reaches Sasang, where the airport light rail ends. This guide compares five areas by station, airport access and who they suit, with three real hotels in each at different tiers. We do not list room rates because they change daily; check the booking pages for your dates.

We earn a commission if you book through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend.

Checked against official transport and hotel sites: October 2026. Prices change daily, so the buttons open live rates.

Haeundae

Haeundae is the Busan most visitors picture: a long sandy beach lined with high-rise hotels. Busan city's official beach page gives the route as Haeundae Station on Line 2, exit 3 or 5, then about a 5-minute walk to the sand. SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium sits at the beach, about a 10-minute walk from the same station according to the aquarium, which makes this the easiest area for families with children.

The trade-off is distance. Haeundae is near the eastern end of Line 2, so trips to Nampo-dong or Busan Station mean a long ride with a transfer at Seomyeon. That matters if you plan to cross the city every day.

From Gimhae Airport, Airport Bus Line 1 runs hourly to stops including Haeundae Beach Entrance, according to Busan city's July 2025 notice. Buses are cashless, carry 23 seats and can fill up, so the city recommends booking through the Bustago app.

Good
  • Beach is a 5-minute walk from Haeundae Station
  • Aquarium and beachfront space for kids
  • Direct hourly airport bus
Watch out
  • Long ride to Nampo-dong and Busan Station
  • Crowded in July and August
  • Beachfront hotels sit in the upscale tier

Gwangalli

Gwangalli Beach faces Gwangan Bridge, which is lit at night, and the beachfront road is lined with cafes and restaurants. Busan city's beach page lists Gwangan Station on Line 2, exit 3 or 5, as the way in. Geumnyeonsan Station, one stop west, is the other option for the southern end of the beach. The city also runs the Gwangalli M Drone Light Show here; check the city's schedule before you plan an evening around it.

It sits between Seomyeon and Haeundae on Line 2, so both are reachable without a transfer. It is a good middle choice if you want a sea view without being at the end of the line.

Good
  • Night view of Gwangan Bridge from many rooms
  • Between Seomyeon and Haeundae on Line 2
  • Calmer than Haeundae
Watch out
  • Beach-road hotels are a 10 to 15 minute walk from the station
  • No airport bus stop in the area
  • Fewer large hotels and family facilities

Seomyeon

Seomyeon is the center of the subway map. It is the only station where Line 1 and Line 2 meet, so Nampo-dong and Busan Station are direct on Line 1, and Gwangalli and Haeundae are direct on Line 2. For a first visit where you want to see both the old downtown and the beaches, this is the safest base.

The area is for shopping and eating rather than sightseeing. Underground arcades connect to the station, and the streets above stay busy late, so ask for a higher floor if you sleep lightly.

Airport Bus Line 2 stops at Seomyeon Station (Lotte Department Store) on its hourly run to Gimhae Airport. By rail, the airport light rail meets Line 2 at Sasang, 8 stops from Seomyeon.

Good
  • Only Line 1 and Line 2 transfer station
  • Direct airport bus
  • Large choice of restaurants
Watch out
  • No beach or sea view
  • Noisy and crowded at night
  • Station is large and easy to get lost in

Nampo-dong and Jagalchi

This is the old harbor downtown and the best area for eating. VisitBusan directs visitors to Jagalchi Market from Jagalchi Station on Line 1, exit 10, or from Nampo Station exit 2, each about a 6-minute walk. BIFF Square, Gukje Market and the shopping street of Gwangbok-ro are within walking distance of the same stations.

Three Line 1 stations cover the area: Jagalchi, Nampo and Jungang. Busan Station is one stop from Jungang, so KTX travelers can get here quickly. The beaches are the weak point: Haeundae means riding Line 1 to Seomyeon and then most of Line 2.

Good
  • Walk to Jagalchi, Gukje Market and BIFF Square
  • Close to Busan Station by Line 1
  • Many small restaurants open early and late
Watch out
  • Far from Haeundae and Gwangalli
  • No direct airport bus
  • Older streets and smaller hotels

Busan Station

Busan Station is where KTX trains from Seoul arrive, and it connects to Line 1 (station 113). You walk off the train into your hotel and can catch an early train home without a subway ride first. For one night, it is the most practical base.

The area is a transit hub rather than a destination. Nampo-dong is two stops south on Line 1 and Seomyeon is six stops north, so food and shopping are close. Haeundae is a long ride with a transfer at Seomyeon.

There is no airport bus stop here under the 2025 airport bus routes. From Gimhae Airport, take the light rail to Sasang, Line 2 to Seomyeon, then Line 1 to Busan Station, or take a taxi.

Good
  • Walk from the KTX platform to your hotel
  • Line 1 to Nampo and Seomyeon without a transfer
  • Easy for early departures
Watch out
  • Not much to see in the immediate area
  • Long trip to the beaches
  • Two transfers from the airport by rail

Getting from Gimhae Airport and Busan Station

From Gimhae Airport by rail

The Busan-Gimhae Light Rail stops at the airport. Ride three stops toward Sasang, where it meets Busan Metro Line 2. If you go the other way, Daejeo (three stops) connects to Line 3, but most visitors want Sasang.

Line 2 is long. Expect roughly an hour or a little more from the airport to Haeundae, including the transfer.

From Gimhae Airport by airport bus

Busan city restarted two airport bus routes on July 31, 2025. Both run every 60 minutes, accept only credit cards and transit cards, and can be booked in the Bustago app. Seats cannot be reserved by number, and you cannot board once the bus is full.

RouteMain stopsAdult fare
Line 1 (Haeundae, Gijang)BEXCO, Park Hyatt Busan, Haeundae Beach Entrance, Jangsan Station9,500 won
Line 2 (Seomyeon, Bujeon)Jurye Station, Seomyeon Station, Bujeon Station7,500 won

Fares are from the city's notice and may change. Transit transfer discounts do not apply.

From Seoul by KTX

KTX trains from Seoul Station arrive at Busan Station. The fastest limited-stop trains take a little over two hours; trains with more stops take longer. Check the exact time for your train on Korail when you book. From Busan Station, Line 1 runs north to Seomyeon and south to Nampo-dong.

How to choose: quick rules

If you have four nights or more, splitting the stay works well: two nights in Nampo-dong or Busan Station for the old town, then two in Haeundae or Gwangalli for the coast.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Busan for first-time visitors?

Seomyeon. It is the only station where subway Lines 1 and 2 meet, so the old downtown, Busan Station and the beaches are all on a direct line. If the beach matters more than convenience, choose Haeundae instead.

Is Haeundae or Gwangalli better?

Haeundae has the bigger beach, more large hotels, the aquarium and a direct airport bus. Gwangalli is smaller and calmer, faces Gwangan Bridge, and sits closer to Seomyeon on Line 2. Families usually prefer Haeundae; couples often prefer Gwangalli.

How do I get from Gimhae Airport to Haeundae?

Take the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail three stops to Sasang and transfer to Line 2 toward Haeundae, or take Airport Bus Line 1, which runs hourly and stops at Haeundae Beach Entrance. The bus is cashless and can be booked in the Bustago app.

Where should I stay in Busan for food and markets?

Nampo-dong. Jagalchi Market is about 6 minutes on foot from Jagalchi Station exit 10 or Nampo Station exit 2, and Gukje Market and BIFF Square are in the same walkable area.

Is there an airport bus to Nampo-dong or Busan Station?

Not on the current routes. Busan city's 2025 airport buses serve Haeundae and Gijang (Line 1) and Seomyeon and Bujeon (Line 2). For Nampo-dong or Busan Station, use the light rail and subway, or a taxi.
