Where to Stay in Seoul: Picking the Right Area for Your Trip

For a first trip to Seoul, stay in Myeongdong: it sits between the palaces and Namsan, has Line 4 and Line 2 nearby, and is two Line 4 stops from Seoul Station. Pick Hongdae for nightlife and a direct airport train, Insadong and Jongno for palaces and old Seoul, Gangnam for business trips and south-side shopping, Dongdaemun for late shopping and three subway lines at one station, and Seoul Station if you have an early flight or are taking the KTX to Busan.

No area here is a bad choice. The real difference is how many transfers you make each day and how long the airport trip takes with luggage. Below, each area gets its subway lines, its airport route, its trade-offs and three hotels across budget, mid-range and upscale. Myeongdong

Myeongdong is the default answer for a first visit because almost everything on a typical itinerary is one short subway ride away. Myeongdong Station is on Line 4, and Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2 is at the other end of the shopping district, so you can reach Hongdae, Gangnam and Seongsu on Line 2 without a transfer.

On foot you can reach Namdaemun Market, the Namsan cable car area and the Lotte and Shinsegae department stores. Gyeongbokgung and Insadong are a short taxi or a few subway stops away.

From the airport, take AREX to Seoul Station and switch to Line 4; Myeongdong is two stops away (Hoehyeon, then Myeongdong). Airport limousine buses 6001 and 6015 also stop in the area, according to The Grand Lotte Seoul and ibis Ambassador Myeongdong.

The downside is crowds. The main streets are packed in the evening, and street-level rooms can be noisy. Hotel rooms in the mid-range tier tend to be small.

Good
  • Central for most sights
  • Line 4 and Line 2 within walking distance
  • Large choice of hotels in every tier
  • Airport limousine bus stops nearby
Watch out
  • Very crowded in the evening
  • Mid-range rooms are often small

Hongdae

Hongdae is the area around Hongik University in western Seoul, known for bars, clubs, live music venues and street performers. It suits travelers who want to be out late and do not mind noise.

It also has the easiest airport connection of any area in this guide. Hongik Univ. Station is a stop on the AREX all-stop train, so you ride from the airport without a transfer. AREX lists the all-stop trip to Seoul Station at 59 minutes from Terminal 1 and 66 minutes from Terminal 2, and Hongik Univ. comes before Seoul Station, so the ride is a little shorter. The same station has Line 2 and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line.

The drawback is distance from the palaces and Myeongdong. Central sights mean a longer subway ride each way, often with a transfer, and expect weekend nights to be loud near the main streets.

Good
  • Direct AREX all-stop train from the airport
  • Best nightlife and live music
  • Line 2 reaches Seongsu and Gangnam without a transfer
Watch out
  • Far from the palaces
  • Loud on weekend nights

Insadong / Jongno

Jongno is the old center of Seoul. From Insadong you can walk to Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village, Ikseondong and Cheonggyecheon Stream. If your trip is mostly palaces, museums and traditional neighborhoods, this area saves the most time.

Anguk Station (Line 3) serves Insadong and Bukchon. Jonggak (Line 1) and Jongno 3-ga (Lines 1, 3 and 5) are on the south side. Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5 serves the area near the main palace gate.

From the airport, take AREX to Seoul Station and change to Line 1: Jonggak is two stops away and Jongno 3-ga is three. For Anguk, change again at Jongno 3-ga to Line 3, one stop north.

Evenings are calmer than in Myeongdong or Hongdae, which suits families and light sleepers. Shopping is mostly crafts and tea houses rather than malls.

Good
  • Walk to palaces and Bukchon
  • Quieter at night
  • Several subway lines on the south edge
Watch out
  • Usually two transfers from the airport
  • Fewer big hotels than Myeongdong

Gangnam

Gangnam is south of the Han River. It is the main business district, with COEX, the Starfield Library, Garosu-gil and many clinics and offices. It makes sense for business travelers, conference visitors and anyone whose plans are mostly on the south side.

Gangnam Station is on Line 2 and the Shinbundang Line. Line 9 runs along the area too, and its express trains connect to Gimpo Airport, which is also an AREX stop. Novotel Ambassador Gangnam gives this rail route from Incheon: AREX to Gimpo Airport, then Line 9 express to Sinnonhyeon. Airport limousine buses are another option and avoid stairs with luggage.

For a first trip focused on palaces and old Seoul, Gangnam is less convenient: most historic sights are north of the river, a long subway ride away. Streets are wide and block distances are long, so walking between places takes longer than the map suggests.

Good
  • Business district and COEX
  • Many dining and shopping options
  • Line 9 express links to Gimpo and AREX
Watch out
  • Far from palaces and old Seoul
  • Long walking distances between blocks

Dongdaemun

Dongdaemun is Seoul's wholesale fashion district, with malls that stay open late into the night, plus Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and the old city wall. It suits shoppers and travelers who keep late hours.

Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station has Lines 2, 4 and 5, which is the main reason to stay here: three lines from one station cover most of the city. Dongdaemun Station nearby has Lines 1 and 4.

From the airport, take AREX to Seoul Station and Line 4 four stops (Hoehyeon, Myeongdong, Chungmuro, Dongdaemun History and Culture Park).

Daytime streets are full of delivery traffic, and some blocks feel more commercial than pleasant.

Good
  • Three subway lines at one station
  • Late-night shopping
  • Same Line 4 as Myeongdong and Seoul Station
Watch out
  • Heavy delivery traffic
  • Less charming streets

Seoul Station

Seoul Station is the city's main rail hub: Lines 1 and 4, AREX, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, GTX-A and KTX trains to Busan and other cities. Staying here makes sense for a first or last night, an early flight, or a trip that includes KTX day trips.

The AREX express train runs nonstop between Seoul Station and the airport: 43 minutes to Terminal 1 and 51 minutes to Terminal 2, according to AREX. The express needs a separate ticket bought before boarding. The all-stop train takes 59 and 66 minutes and accepts a transit card.

Myeongdong is two stops away on Line 4, and City Hall and Jonggak are one and two stops away on Line 1. The area itself has few sights.

Good
  • Fastest train to the airport
  • KTX to Busan and other cities
  • Two stops from Myeongdong
Watch out
  • Few sights in the area itself
  • Busy roads around the station

Getting from Incheon Airport to each area

AREX, the airport railroad, is the main rail link. It runs two kinds of trains:

AreaRail route from Incheon
Seoul StationAREX express or all-stop, no transfer
HongdaeAREX all-stop to Hongik Univ., no transfer
MyeongdongAREX to Seoul Station, Line 4 two stops
DongdaemunAREX to Seoul Station, Line 4 four stops
Insadong / JongnoAREX to Seoul Station, Line 1 two stops to Jonggak
GangnamAREX all-stop to Gimpo Airport, Line 9 express

Airport limousine buses are the alternative when you have heavy bags or are staying far from a station. Several hotels in this guide list buses that stop at or near the door, such as 6015 for ibis Ambassador Myeongdong and KAL 6703 for ibis Styles Ambassador Gangnam. Check your hotel's directions page for the exact route number and stop.

How to choose: quick rules

Splitting a trip between two areas works well in Seoul. A common pattern is Myeongdong or Insadong for most of the stay and Seoul Station for the final night before an early flight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Seoul for first-time visitors?

Myeongdong. It has Line 4 and Line 2 within walking distance, is two Line 4 stops from Seoul Station, and puts most sights within a short ride. Insadong is the better pick if your plans are mostly palaces.

Which Seoul area has a direct train from Incheon Airport?

Seoul Station and Hongdae. The AREX express runs nonstop to Seoul Station in 43 minutes from Terminal 1, and the AREX all-stop train stops at Hongik Univ. Station in Hongdae on the way to Seoul Station.

Is Gangnam a good place to stay for tourists?

It is good for business trips, COEX events and south-side shopping, but most palaces and old neighborhoods are north of the river, a long subway ride away. For a sightseeing trip, Myeongdong or Insadong saves time.

Where should families stay in Seoul?

Insadong and Jongno are quieter at night and close to palaces. Apartment-style options such as Orakai Insadong Suites, Fraser Place Central Seoul or the residence rooms at Novotel Ambassador Seoul Dongdaemun have kitchens and more space.

Is it worth staying near Seoul Station?

Yes for a first or last night, an early flight or KTX day trips. For a whole trip, the area has few sights of its own, so most visitors spend the other nights in Myeongdong or Insadong.
