How to read Korean prices
Korean prices are written with the ₩ sign or with the word for won after the number, and there are no cents. A coffee might be ₩4,500 and a basic subway ride around ₩1,500, so the numbers look large at first. A quick way to estimate: with the dollar near ₩1,346, drop the last three zeros and adjust. ₩10,000 is roughly $7; ₩50,000, the largest banknote, is roughly $37.
Prices on shelves and menus already include 10% value-added tax, and tipping is not expected, so the number you see is normally the number you pay.

Getting a better rate
The figure above is a reference rate without fees. What you actually receive depends on where you exchange or how you pay: airport booths, city exchange offices, ATM withdrawals and card payments each add a different margin. Before you go, check what your own bank and card charge for foreign transactions, and compare any quoted rate with the reference rate here to see how big the margin is. Our guide to paying in Korea covers cards, cash and ATMs.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 10,000 won in US dollars?
At the ECB reference rate for 2026-10-15, 10,000 won is about 7.43 US dollars (1 USD = ₩1,345.90). The converter above updates to the latest working-day rate when you open the page.
Where does the exchange rate come from?
We use the euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank on working days, delivered through the free Frankfurter API. Rates for currencies other than the euro are cross rates calculated from those figures.
Why is my bank or card rate different?
Reference rates are mid-market figures with no fees. Banks, exchange booths and card networks add a margin or fees, so the rate you actually get is usually somewhat worse. Use this converter for budgeting and to judge how good a quoted rate is.
What Korean banknotes and coins are there?
Korean banknotes come in 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 won; coins in everyday use are 10, 50, 100 and 500 won.
Is the rate updated on weekends?
No. The ECB publishes reference rates on working days only, so on weekends and ECB holidays the converter shows the most recent working-day rate and its date.
